Victorian Seniors Festival Recap and Highlights
Held every October in various locations around the Melbourne CBD, the Victorian Seniors Festival is a weeklong celebration that includes various low-cost and free activities and entertainment for the elderly.
The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services organises the festival to encourage seniors to re-experience their younger years and enjoy activities with each other as they celebrate ageing well and positively. The festival is also used as a great opportunity to celebrate and value the older residents.
Recap of Last Year’s Festival
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 Victorian Seniors Festival was held differently. Entitled Victorian Seniors Festival Reimagined, the celebration was done online so participants can stay safe.
The festival reached participants in the comfort of their homes and had over one hundred and thirty-one video performances, radio shows on Radio reimagined, and a series of interviews. With over sixty thousand video views, it became easier for seniors to attend the events.
The online event was hosted by Tristan Meacham and Ben Reid from the Independent Arts Organisation, while Radio reimagined, included thirty-eight programs with 127 performers and had about eleven thousand listens. A few local online events were held too and had activities, presentations and entertainment such as cabaret, jazz, spoken word, puppetry, progressive rock, Polynesian laments and Zumba dance.
Event organisers and seniors had a lot of fun creating, reimagining and watching the festival. They also organised a free transport week from the 21st – 28th of March 2021 to make up for 2020 indoor and quarantine stay for all the seniors and their caretakers.
Even with the challenges of the pandemic, the 2020 Victorian Festival served its purpose and remained successful throughout.
